Join AYCO/ACE for a Two-Part Discussion on Social Circus and Social Justice, Led by Rev Rothschild

Explore how social circus can address and challenge systemic racism and colonial power structures in a two-part workshop led by Rev Rothschild (they/them), a senior at Tufts University studying Race, Colonialism, Diaspora Studies, and Education. These discussions support Rev’s college culmination project, focusing on building inclusivity and equity within circus spaces.

About the Discussion:

Rev’s work draws from Critical Race Theory, Black Feminist Thought, anti-colonial sports anthropology, and other frameworks to examine how race and colonial history shape our cultural spaces. While studying these frameworks, Rev noticed parallels to social circus, yet found limited research connecting these fields. This workshop aims to bridge that gap, providing theoretical insights and actionable strategies to make social circus more inclusive and just.

Part 1 (December 16)

  • Theoretical Exploration: Using insights from sports anthropology, critical race studies, and Black Feminist Theory, we’ll discuss systemic racism and its impact on social circus.
  • Key Themes: Our discussion will center around genealogy, community, coalition, and the intersection of the personal, political, and performance aspects within circus.
  • Collective Visioning: Together, we’ll reflect, ask questions, and reimagine what social circus can become.
  • Resources: A curated list of readings and articles for deeper exploration will be provided.

Part 2 (December 18)

  • Practical Applications: We’ll apply the theories from Part 1 to our own experiences, focusing on practical changes to make circus spaces more equitable.
  • Collaborative Brainstorming: Participants will work together to create realistic strategies for fostering inclusion and addressing systemic barriers in circus.
  • Action Plans: Develop actionable steps to bring these changes to life in your own circus settings.

Note: Register for each session individually. Attendance at both parts is encouraged but not required.

About the Speaker

Rev Rothschild (they/them) is a senior at Tufts University majoring in Race, Colonialism, Diaspora Studies and Education. They have worked with several circus organizations, including Wise Fool NM, Circesteem, Circus Up!, Commonwealth Circus Center, and AYCO over the past nine years. They have long been interested in connecting their academic background in critical race theories, coalitional frameworks for social change, and anticolonial pedagogy with their work as a coach and participant in social circuses. This project is a culmination of their work and they are super excited for the opportunity to share ideas, practices, and dreams for social circus! When Rev is not thinking about school or circus, they can be found crafting, concocting new recipes for strange meals that only they could enjoy, or meandering around their neighborhood marveling at all the trees.
